VJMC Show set for May holiday return

VJMC show

Next month sees the return of one our favourite fixtures in the Irish biking calendar.

Indeed such is our fondness for the VJMC Classic Motorcycle Show that, as part of our wider campaign to back grassroots biking, we are proud to sponsor the 2024 event.

The Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Club (VJMC) was set up several years ago by a group of like-minded bike enthusiasts with a fondness for machines of a particular heritage.

For the last few of those years they have – in spite of being a little older than the bikes they ride – been busy putting their annual show together.

This year is no different.

As the name implies, the girls and boys who make up the club have a huge affection for the tastier of the older Japanese machines.

A lot of them date from the early seventies, when the transition from the dominance of the established brands to the Japanese ones was taking place.

Different strokes

VJMC ShowAs such, a lot of the bikes are powered by two-stroke engines.

Examples include the legendary Yamaha RD 350, accompanied by bigger four-stroke machines such as the Kawasaki K1, Honda’s CB750 and a decent showing of the iconic Cub machines.

Those last ones were known by old school Dublin riders as ‘Gappers’.

This was because when it came to filtering through Dublin traffic, there wasn’t a gap that they couldn’t fit through!

Old School

VJMC ShowThis is an old school show.

Whilst it’s being sponsored by Principal Insurance, the rest is put together by people who have a genuine affection for the bikes that they show.

Just one way this is expressed is through friendly competition, with the award of the Bike of the Show trophy at the end of a a fun and busy day.

Such is the affable nature of the whole affair, that, even if you’re not a member, you can enter your bike.

The show takes place this coming May 5th on the Sunday of the Bank Holiday weekend.

There are a number of stalls available which always attract auto jumble sellers, as well as some of the trade. If you’re in the selling game and are interested in booking a stall, please give Jason a call on 0872603236.

The National Show Centre in Swords is, once again, this years venue. Accompanied children get in for free, with the taller amongst us pay a very reasonable €15.

The event is more than family friendly and runs from 10.30am until 4.30pm, so there’s plenty of time to get dinner ready!
