Thumbs up for Knox Zero 4 gloves?

Knox Zero 4With the mercury plummeting, it’s time to think how best to keep our digits warm as well as safe.

This week Paul Browne road-tested Knox’s new Zero 4 gloves.

What you need to know is, did he give them the thumbs up?

I’ve been wearing Knox gloves for quite a while now.

The company’s Handroids are a particular favourite, having saved my hands when my enthusiasm outperformed my talent on a long-ago trackday.

While I do ride a bike all year round, I do find that I tend to whinge about the cold a lot more than I used to

I am, therefore, quite happy to be sporting a new pair of Zero 4 mitts from the same company.

Not wet and warm

These are winter gloves that are not just warm and waterproof, but offer a lot of the protection. Based on long experience, it’s what I’ve come to expect from the company and it’s  very nice to be able to again add the word ‘safe’ to warm and waterproof.

On the outer glove there are all those things that I’ve come to appreciate in a pair of Knox gloves.

On the palm is the scaphoid protection system.

This is the pair of clever ‘sliders’ that allow the riders hands to slide from under their weight in the event of an incident.

They basically prevent the scaphoid – the boat-shaped bone in your wrist – from being crushed.

There’s also a grip on the ends of your fingers and over the start of your palm.

This makes holding the bars so much more comfortable. It’s called, wait for it, a debossed hexagon design’ by the team at Knox.

The fingers are also touch screen ready, which means that you can call the emergency services with ease when you get stuck in a snowdrift, in February, in Cavan.

Knuckle truster

On the other side there’s more good stuff.

The knuckles are protected with a micro lock armour.

This, in turn, is wrapped in a very cool fibre. This extends to the wrist where both sides are protected by armour exactly as they would be on the company’s high performance race gloves.

They are wound shut via a Boa closer which is complemented by a traditional Velcro band on the inside of the wrist.

The glove itself is made from goat nappa leather. If you’re a vegan, you’re going to have to find something else to wear. The poor little creature’s skin is complemented by a high-strength fabric inside of which all the wintery goodness nests.

The first bit is the membrane that keeps the water out. This one is called an eVent. Because its air permeable it allows the moisture – your hand sweat – escape the glove which leaves you with a nice dry and comfortable pair of hands for hours at a time.

All gloved up

Inside the glove is some rather wonderful Primaloft Gold water-resistant insulation. This makes them so comfortable that you could be forgiven for believing that they feel like love itself, were I to know what that feeling is.

On Wednesday I covered 300 kilometres in temperatures of as little as 2º. The last hour or so was in the dark. The gloves kept my hands comfortable the whole way. That’s impressive!

One of the things that I really like is the fact that the visor wipe on the thumb is white. It’s so simple so yet so very clever when it comes to locating it on a rainy night.

You’ll be able to find Knox Zero 4 gloves at Adventure Motorcycles Ireland in Gorey, with prices yet to be confirmed, in sizes from XS-3XL.
