Something for the weekend?
Punchestown Racecourse in Kildare is the place to be this weekend.
After way too long without an annual motorcycle show, we finally have one again and the doors open at 10am tomorrow, Saturday the 14th.
This is one that I’m really looking forward to.
While we may have had the epic yearly event that is EICMA in Milan – for many the definitive motorcycle event of the year – as well as Motorcycle Live in Birmingham’s NEC and the very well received Scottish show, having our own is always going to be good.
Very good indeed.
There’s a long list of exhibitors including BMW, Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, Piaggio and Vespa, MotoGuzzi, Aprilia, Kove, GasGas and probably another one or two that I’ve forgotten!
No show would be complete without clothing to sell and the Irish show is no different with experts from Knox, Klim, Halvarssons, Helite and Scott all having kit for sale at the two-day event.
MotoXpo has been set up by MotorCycle Ireland to raise money to fund racing here in Ireland.
Mondello Park will be in Punchestown as will endurance racing teams, road racers as well as a number of hugely successful Irish racers who compete at an international level all across Europe every year.
My very favourite has to be the sidecar teams. How anyone sits in one of those things at that speed with someone else in control escapes me!
Two-wheeled travel operators will also be well represented, with companies such as Overlanders, MotoCraft, AdvMotoHaven and the lads who run the annual May bank holiday RevUp event will be on hand to sign riders up for the best three days of fun that you can have on two wheels.
Classic bikes and classic bike racing will be taking pride of place, with some very fast machines from years gone by on display.
Watch out too for the welcome return of Ireland’s custom show.
In addition, the girls and boys from Ireland’s Scooter Association will have their own stand with some beautiful machines to drool over.
The entertainment line-up is impressive.
Legendary photographer Stephen Davison, will be in the building and on Saturday evening one of the local hotels, Lawlors, in Naas, will be hosting a live chat show.
This will feature none other than Eddie Laycock, Brian Ried, Alan Irwin, Conor McGinn and Johnny Rae senior.
Evan from FreeStyle MotoX Ireland will be putting on his show several times each day as will the Trial Star team.
There’s also going to be a live action stage with music, workshops, interviews, competitions.
Both the Gardai and the RSA will be in attendance.
The Guards are presenting their BikeSafe initiative and the RSA will have their ‘Shuttle’ at the show. Between both there are a lot of experts to talk to about being a safer rider on our roads.
If you have ankle-biters, there’s a kiddie zone to keep them occupied.
And last, but definitely not least, there will be plenty of food, with an on-site restaurant and street food.
MotoXpo is on both Saturday and Sunday this weekend. Tickets are available now on www.motoxpo.ie or at the door. There’s no charge for parking and accompanied kids under 16 get in for free.
I hope to see you there!
