The new Dragon from LS2 has not only been certified under the latest EU helmet safety standard – ECE 22.06 – but has been Gold stamped by the Auto Cycle Union, confirming its suitability for the rigours and dangers of the track.
Securing these accreditations has been very much down to how this premium lid has been designed and made.
Key is the use of forged carbon which differs from your standard carbon fibre.
Strong, yet light, it’s a composite made by pressing chopped pieces of carbon fibre into resin.
This process allows it to be moulded into shape as a single piece, in this case the helmet shell and component parts.
Because the fibres are short, they run in multiple directions within the resin. This adds up to five times more strength so you know you’re getting maximum protection.
Forged carbon is used throughout the Dragon’s construction.
This includes the ventilation ports on the chin, the forehead and the exhausts at the rear of the helmet.
Preventing the head version of a ‘tank slapper’ is the rear spoiler. It too is made of the strong stuff.
The only fly in the ointment is the unfortunate fact that this type of carbon was developed by a company called Callaway Golf.
This outfit uses the stuff in the shafts of those sticks that golf types use to hit those little balls around fields and parks with. But who am I to judge and all that…
As standard these helmets come with those clever, quick and safe release pads on the wearers’ cheeks and a Double D-Ring closer to keep the strap in place.
There’s also multi-density EPS lining which is highly effective at absorbing what we’re going to quietly refer to as ‘impacts’.
The Dragon’s aperture is nice and wide and the quick release visor comes with a pinlock anti-fog shield as standard.
There is even a dropdown sun visor.
The lining, meanwhile, is both anti-microbial and anti-odour thanks to its X-Static Silver Fabric liner which also maintains the wearer’s temperature.
It additionally features clever laser cut foam inserts that ‘hold’ the riders head comfortably. You can, of course, remove the lining and give it a wash.
LS2 even thought to incorporate a voice-operated Bluetooth system by Cardo. This allows connectivity to other riders as well as enabling calling. It fits the helmet perfectly.
The Dragon helmet weighs just 1450 grams, while the sizes run all the way from extra small to triple extra large and do so over three different shell sizes.
They’re available from Kennedy Motorcycles and dealers across the country, priced at €479.95.
