Furygan’s total eclipse of the parts

Furygan Eclipse

Keen to protect his parts, Paul Browne is delighted to discover there’s some new Furygan kit on the rails.

The Eclipse marries the traditional strength and flexibility of leather with lots of high-tech protection.

I do like new stuff.

I like seeing the DPD dude pull up outside my country pile and bring the big box to the door for me to sign for.

I like carefully cutting  the tape that holds the lid shut with a ‘sharp and dangerous’ blade.

I like the smell of ‘new’ when I open the box.

But what I really like is the smell of a new leather suit.

Furygan, those clever French people, have just released a new one piece race /trackday suit called the Eclipse.

The guys in the factory have developed this using all the data collected by their riders in MotoGP, WSBK and the TT by the Furygan race Service.

They’ve been around that long that this is the fifth of their suits that I’ve worn, or that I’m about to.

That first one, all those years ago, was so simple. Just leather, basic armour and a pair of sliders.

They’ve evolved over the years but this new Eclipse is a completely different animal.

Animal magic

Furygan EclipseBy different animal I do, of course mean a different cow.

The suits are still made of perforated leather which has been chosen for its strength and thickness. Abrasion resistance is the name of the game here. That and durability.

All of the panels are triple stitched. This, basically, means that all the seams have a fold of material stitched over them.

Apparently, back in the dark ages, the suits were prone to coming apart in unfortunate impact type situations simply because the stitches weren’t strong enough. That’s not the case anymore.

One of the things about a suit like this is how difficult they usually are to bed in.

Once again this is no longer the case as the Eclipse is made with high tenacity bi-stretch inserts.

We’re talking stretchy bits in the stretchy areas that manage to be elastic while still being resistant in the event of a parting of ways between the rider and their motorcycle.

Soft touch

Then there is the Neoprene.

Love, they say, is elusive, but Neoprene will always be there, offering us the emotional comfort that we both need and deserve. It’s soft to the touch and renders any garment windproof. It can be found on the collar and cuffs of the suit. These all combine to offer a near perfect fit holding, as they do, the rider’s shape.

Furygan EclipseA decent helping of third party safety is built into the suit.

First up is the Kevlar which is stitched into the double layers of leather at the more vulnerable areas of the rider’s perfect body; the hips, forearms and last what is euphemistically known as the seat. Ass to our American cousins, something a smidge ruder to us.

The Kevlar significantly reduces wear as well as the inevitable heat transfer that results in travelling along a stretch of tarmac at 200 kilometres an hour on the previously mentioned ‘seat’.

Then there’s the In&Motion airbag.

This suit has been developed in conjunction with In&Motion and offers seven times the protection that a good back and chest protector offer.

Get an air vest. At this point you’ve no business being on a bike without one.

Orange shell suit

Furygan Eclipse D30Finally, there’s the D30 protection.

This stuff is simply brilliant.

While there are external shells on the outside of the shoulders and knees, in addition to elbow sliders, it’s the orange armour underneath which is the really impressive part of the safety equation.

It’s incredibly light as well as ergonomic and moulds to fit the rider perfectly. You’ll find D30 inside on the knees, hips, elbows and shoulders and there’s an option to add a set to the chest.

I can’t overstate how clever this stuff is. It’s been developed on the race track and offers a whole new era in motorcycle clothing protection.

While it offers huge amounts of impact resistance through clever energy absorption it’s also so light and so flexible that once it’s on I simply forget about it.

Olfactory factors

Now, let’s talk about smell, the natural if not endearing kind.

Spending six to seven glorious 20-minute sessions on track, in glorious sunshine, for three days in a row on a Spanish race circuit, creates a whole other smell in a suit. An unpleasant one.

Furygan have done two things here. The first is the option to fit a hydration pack in the suit’s hump. The next is to fit it with a full detachable liner.  Simply remove it at the end of a sweaty day, give it a quick wash and let it dry overnight.

The Eclipse from Furygan is available in a choice of colours from €1,100.
